Traffic jam information projected onto VMS-trailers of Heijmans

Floating Car Data (FCD)

In collaboration with Be-Mobile, we provide Heijmans with real-time traffic jam information. This information is developed on the basis of Floating Car Data (FCD). This data is obtained from popular traffic information apps such as Flitsmeister.
The GPS data that is released gives real-time insight into the traffic flow and travel times. Via a link between Be-Mobile and Traffic Fleet, this can be projected in real-time on VMS-trailers, in this case those of Heijmans.

Online in a few clicks

Data about traffic flow used to be obtained through vehicle detection loops in the road surface or through traffic cameras. With the current technologies we are able to provide real-time traffic jam information to a VMS-trailer in a few clicks. This significantly reduces costs and increases the flexibility to position a VMS-trailer anywhere in the Netherlands.

Automated signalling prevents accidents

After switching on the VMS-trailer, Be-Mobile defines a certain section of the road. When a traffic jam occurs on that section, the Floating Car Data immediately sends a report to the Flitsmeister system. Users of the Flitsmeister app will receive this message on their smartphone.
For a trial period of two months, Be-Mobile now also sends this data to the Heijmans Traffic Fleet system, which then automatically sends a signal to the modem of the VMS-trailer. The display of the VMS-trailer then switches to a pre-defined traffic jam warning.
During the broadening of the highway A1 nearby Apeldoorn this principe was used for the first time. During two months, the system has functioned without problems.
