Travel time information

Roadworks, accidents, diversions and events can cause inconvenience to motorists and the surrounding area. It is important to timely regulate the traffic and advise motorists during such traffic situations. Displaying travel time information is a useful tool for this purpose. Travel time information helps motorists to better estimate the duration of their route and, if necessary, allows them to choose a different route to their final destination.

Advise motorists about delays

The travel time information can easily be configured in Traffic Fleet. When the routes are programmed, one or more systems can be installed along the roadside. Floating Car Data (FCD) then uses an algorithm to retrieve the travel time for each route. The current travel time of the routes is displayed on the display of the system. As soon as the delay increases or decreases on one of the routes, the travel time for that route is automatically renewed within seconds. Consequently, motorists are always informed of the current travel time on their route.

Your smartphone generates Floating Car Data

To generate travel time data we use Floating Car Data. From a smartphone or vehicle a GPS signal can be collected, which provides information about location and movement. Tracking and processing this anonymous GPS signal allows us to calculate up-to-date travel times. The current and previous data are combined in an algorithm to obtain a correct value for the travel time.

The FCD technology offers more advantages. Devices such as measurement sensors on the road are needless. This results in immediate costs savings in installation and maintenance. Furthermore, the technology has no restrictions concerning its location and therefore travel time information can be collected from highways, regional roads and local roads.

Avoid nuisance during events

Events can cause major inconvenience to motorists. In order to prevent this from happening, it is very important that proper advice is provided to motorists. The systems can be set up along the different routes that lead to the event. In the context of dynamic traffic management, travel time information and automatic diversion routes can be programmed. If the traffic is jammed on a particular route, the gathered data will be used to automatically switch to the pre-programmed diversion routes.
