Traffic Fleet connected to all Rijkswaterstaat traffic control centres

Enhanced control over temporary traffic regulations

A well-designed mobility plan is of great importance for the proper implementation of temporary traffic regulations. However, these traffic regulations are often difficult to manage because they are controlled by a contractor.

Traffic operators have little control over these situations, which can cause even more hindrance. By means of an API designed for the traffic control centres (TCC), traffic management commands and scenarios can be interchanged between the network management systems. This connection makes temporary traffic regulations controllable for the traffic control centres.

Traffic scenarios of traffic control centres on temporary traffic systems

Thanks to a server-level connection between Traffic Fleet and the Rijkswaterstaat TCCs, all temporary traffic systems can now be included in the traffic scenarios of a TCC.

The traffic operators are able to manage both permanent and temporary traffic measurements, being in full control over the traffic situations. All Rijkswaterstaat’s traffic control centres are connected:

  • TCC for the northwest of the Netherlands at Velsen
  • TCC for the north and east of the Netherlands at Wolfheze
  • TCC for the middle of the Netherlands at Utrecht
  • TCC for the southwest of the Netherlands at Rhoon
  • TCC for the south of the Netherlands at Helmond

In the future, we also expect metropolitan municipalities to become connected, in order to be able to optimise the traffic flow in densely populated areas.

In action in the traffic control centre at Utrecht in collaboration with Heijmans

Heijmans is the first to connect its VMS-trailers to the TCC at Utrecht. Since June 2017, its VMS-trailers have been controlled by the TCC at Utrecht for the widening of the highway A1/A27.

Motorists are being informed about diversions and current travel times, which are projected on the VMS-trailers of Heijmans. Traffic Fleet processes Floating Car Data (FCD) as up-to-date traffic information for this purpose.
